About Kirkdale Christmas Pop Up

We asked

  • Anyone in our local community to share a skill, talent or interest of theirs as a fun and engaging  learn / do exercise with others
  • High street businesses and community organisations to share their space as pop up venues for these sessions and / or to sponsor our event
  • People with time, skills and an interest in our local community to become a member of the team that could bring everything together and deliver these within an event programme
  • Everyone to help promote the event through their own networks – family,  friends, clients, congregations etc.

We got

  • 50 pop up sessions celebrating the skills, talents and interests within our community
  • 20 Pop Up venues that bring these skills, talents and interests to the buildings, places and spaces that are our high street
  • An event programme that will transform our high street businesses into DIY performance spaces, magic our empty  shops into Christmas pop-ups and sparkle our pubs and restaurants with everything local community.

We hope to achieve

Community – General

  • A better understanding within the local community of what makes up the local community – our skills,  talents, networks, organisations and economies and the physical spaces and places that  support these things

Community – Social Capital

  • New relationships and networks forged in the planning and delivery of the initiative
  • New relationships between Pop Up activity people, local businesses and community organisations
  • New relationships and / or better understanding of others in the local community coming from people having spent time mutually engaged in fun and participatory activities with others in their community with a similar interest (e.g floral arrangement)

Community – Resilience

  • A community with experience of  self organising an initiative identifying and harnessing its economic, social and physical capital around shared aims and objectives

Community co – production supporting our learning economy

  • Our learning economy post the closure of the Kirkdale Adult Learning Centre earlier this year though our  themeing of Pop Ups to learning  and, in so doing,  aligning and harnessing our skills, interests, networks, facilities etc different to support  community learning.

Education Resource

  • Full Involvement of local schools and for schools to utilise the array of learning resources that this initiative will identify

General Economy

  • Existing relationships and the sparking of new connections between people, networks, skills, economies etc  –  in so doing support  innovation
  • Kirkdale Town Centre as a destination through our promotion of the event itself
  • Promotion of small and micro businesses and individuals (singers, craft people, yoga teachers, creative writers) as through promotion of the event itself
  • Increased footfall along the Kirkdale High street on the day just three weeks before Christmas
  • Shop owners connecting to new  customers and visa versa  through Pop Ups  working to get people into shops or businesses
  • Pop Ups connect with  customers  who, by taking part in the pop up,  have already demonstrated an interest in  their “product”

And a terrific Christmas event
